The Six Principles of Doula Care

Neighbors Nomadas practices in full alignment with the doula model of care as defined by Lifespan Doulas. The word doula has Greek origins and means “one who serves.” A doula offers holistic, human-centered support for individuals, families, and communities across life’s thresholds — emotional presence, practical assistance, and empowering guidance — a trusted, non-medical companion so no one has to navigate alone. As a lifespan doula practice, our support is grounded in six guiding principles.

Non-Medical Support

Doulas refrain from giving medical advice or performing any clinical or medicalized tasks. This is fundamental to the role.

Non-Judgmental Support

Care is based on the client’s values and goals, even if those differ from values cherished by the doula.

Family-Centered Approach

The individual and their family are the focus of support. Doulas work in a spirit of collaboration, not replacement.

Holistic Care

Doulas recognize the bio-psycho-social and spiritual aspects of the whole person and provide services in the context of this understanding.

Empowerment

Doulas promote informed decision-making and foster maximum self-determination, encouraging self-efficacy and self-advocacy rather than dependency.

Team Members

Doulas are collaborators who work alongside other care providers, deferring to medical experts while providing much-needed continuity of care across the full continuum.
