CAREGIVER RESPITE
WHAT IT IS
Caregiver Respite is planned, reliable relief for family caregivers - a scheduled time when a trained, compassionate doula takes over so that the caregiver can genuinely step away. It is not a reluctant last resort. It is a recognized and necessary part of sustainable caregiving. The person being cared for receives warm, consistent support, and the caregiver returns refreshed and better able to show up for the long haul.
WHY IT MATTERS
Caregiver burnout is not a personal failure - it is a predictable outcome of sustained, unsupported care. When caregivers do not get adequate rest, their own health suffers, their relationships strain, and their capacity to provide quality care diminishes. Planned respite is one of the most effective interventions available - not just for the caregiver, but for the person they are caring for, who benefits from a caregiver who is rested, present, and whole.
HOW A DOULA HELPS
A lifespan doula brings warmth, attentiveness, and practical capability to every respite visit. They can provide companionship and social engagement for your loved one, support light housekeeping and meal preparation, assist with paring down and organizing, tend to lawn and garden maintenance, handle errands, and manage the everyday tasks that keep a household running - all while you are away. The time a doula spends with your loved one can also become an opportunity for meaningful conversation, creative activity, or home socialization for someone who may be largely homebound. Respite care and companion care often work hand in hand.
GETTING STARTED
Respite care can begin as a single planned visit or develop into a regular rhythm of support - whatever your schedule and circumstances call for. The first step is a conversation about what you need, what your loved one needs, and how to build a plan that gives you both what you deserve.
“Should is not a word of an open heart - What caregiver needs tough love? Caregivers need supportive love… Never give from the depths of your well, but from your overflow. ”
