LEGACY WORK

WHAT IT IS

Legacy projects are intentional acts of meaning-making — written, recorded, visual, or creative works that capture who a person is, what they value, and what they want to leave behind. They may take the form of a letter to a beloved child, a recorded conversation about a life well lived, a scrapbook of cherished photographs, a collection of family recipes with the stories behind them, or a simple document that says: here is what I believe, here is what I have learned, and here is what I wish for you. No two legacy projects look the same, because no two lives do. What they share is the intention — to connect, to be known, and to endure.

WHY IT MATTERS

Legacy work reminds us that we are more than the illness we are navigating, the role we have been assigned, or the circumstances we find ourselves in. It creates something tangible where before there was only feeling. It allows a person to acknowledge the people who mattered, ask for forgiveness or offer it, say thank you in the specific and particular way that means the most, and say I love you in a form that can be returned to again and again after they are gone. For families, a legacy project is one of the most enduring gifts they will ever receive. For the person creating it, the process itself is often transformative — clarifying what matters, what has been, and what still needs to be said.

HOW A DOULA HELPS

A lifespan doula does not tell you what your legacy should look like. They sit with you, listen deeply, and help you find the shape of what you already know you want to say. They may guide you through reflective questions, help organize photographs and keepsakes, assist with recording a story or writing a letter, coordinate the production of a finished piece, or simply hold space while you work through something that has been waiting a long time to be expressed. For those who feel they have nothing worth capturing, a doula helps them discover otherwise. For those who have so much they do not know where to begin, a doula helps them find a starting place.

GETTING STARTED

Every legacy project begins with a question — often a simple one. What do you want the people you love to know about you? What has your life taught you that you want to pass on? What have you been meaning to say? The answers do not need to be polished or perfect. They just need to be yours.

“Legacy work is the process of reflecting on your life and creating something tangible to leave behind. It is about sharing special moments, stories, or thoughts, and connecting with people you care about.”
