THRESHOLD JOURNEYS
WHAT IT IS
Threshold Journeys is a logistical planning and coordination service for meaningful, once-in-a-lifetime experiences that sit at the intersection of place, people, and purpose. It is for families navigating the tender and complicated work of honoring a loved one’s final wishes - including creating a vigil plan and providing bedside accompaniment through a loved one’s final days. It is for individuals and families marking a major life transition - a diagnosis, a recovery, a reinvention, a milestone - with an experience that reflects who they are and what they value. And it is for anyone who has carried a bucket list wish for years and is finally ready, with the right support, to make it happen. Whatever the threshold, this service ensures that the experience unfolds with intention, care, and as little friction as possible.
WHY IT MATTERS
Without support, the logistical weight of these experiences can diminish them - or prevent them from happening at all. Gathering family across distances, navigating permits and regulations, coordinating travel and lodging for a group carrying grief or celebration, knowing who to call and what to do as a vigil begins, or simply carving out the time and space to make a meaningful journey happen - all of it falls to the people least equipped to manage it, at the moment they are least resourced to do so. Threshold Journeys removes that weight.
HOW A DOULA HELPS
A lifespan doula brings to this work the same qualities they bring to every threshold: calm, care, and the ability to hold both the practical and the emotional dimensions of an experience at once. They will work with you to understand the need and intention - what the journey means, who needs to be there, what the place or moment requires, and what would make the experience feel complete. From there, they handle the research, the reservations, the permits, the coordination, and the contingency planning - building an experience that is logistically sound and emotionally honoring. They serve as the point of contact so that grieving or celebrating family members do not have to. For a bucket list or milestone journey, this might mean making the logistics of a long-deferred dream finally manageable - researching destinations, coordinating travel companions, arranging accessibility needs, and building a realistic plan that gets the journey from wish to reality. For end-of-life journeys, this also includes building a plan in advance - who is present, how people are notified, defining and creating the sacred space - coordinating with the wider care team, and providing accompaniment and continuity of presence. No matter which chapter of life, no two thresholds look the same, and no two plans will either - journeys may be taken solo or shared, and both are held with equal care.
GETTING STARTED
Every threshold journey begins with needs and intentions - often still forming. Sometimes the wish is clearly articulated; sometimes it is a feeling more than a plan. A doula meets you where you are and holds space, empowering the needs of the journey to take shape. An exploratory conversation is always the place to start - let the doula be your map maker.
“Ritual has fractured. And the emotional relocation that is grief is far more difficult to navigate. So we need new rituals to help us travel the emotional relocation of grief, of honoring the living and the life of those who’ve left.”
~ Kristoffer Hughes, As the Last Leaf Falls
